COMPETITIONS. There are three levels of competitions: Championships, Regionals, and Area Competitions. The Chapter office, the main HQ in Southern California, will forward your information as appropriate. You will be contacted depending on our needs.

 

Chapter Volunteer Opportunities. There are Championship events spread throughout Southern California. Registration forms are sent out approximately 8 weeks prior to each event. If you are interested in receiving a registration form for any of the events below, you must indicate the event on Section 4, Question 2 of the Volunteer Registration form.

 

 

Special Olympics Programs. There are 33 Special Olympics Area Programs, 6 Regional Programs, and 1 Chapter Office. Volunteer opportunities are available at each program level. Please indicate the Special Olympics program level(s) you would like to volunteer for on Section 4, Questions 1, 3, and 4 of the Volunteer Registration form. ·     Undergoes classroom, hands on training, and certification process.

·     Primary contact person for sport. Maintains athletes' records and completes registration process for competition.

·     Works with Special Olympics staff to select training site and time. Organizes practices with other coaches.

·     Attends competitions with the athletes. Liaison for upcoming coaches training and certification schools; encourages assistant coaches to become certified.

Participation is seasonal for each sport. The minimum commitment is two hours per week for eight weeks.

COACHING:

ASSISTANT

COACH

 

·     Undergoes one-day certification within his/her sport.

·     Assesses each athlete to determine skill level for competition and training.

·     Develops eight-week training program for each athlete including fundamental skills, conditioning, and rules.

·     Has complete knowledge and abides by Sports Rules of Special Olympics.

Participation is seasonal for each sport. The minimum commitment is two hours per week for eight weeks.

COACHING:

SPORT

VOLUNTEER

 

·     Is not required to become certified, helps out with practices; assists coach with assessing athlete

·     skills.

·     Not necessarily expert in sport but comes to practice 75% of the time.

SPORT OFFICIAL

·     Certified NGB official to oversee competition.

·     Adopt local Special Olympics teams.

·     Organize Unified Sports teams by combining group members with Special Olympics athletes.

·     Organize members of school sports teams to become certified Special Olympics coaches or officials.

·     Conduct Special Olympics sports competitions or demonstrations during regular sports events.

Commitment varies.

FUNDRAISING

·     Plan and/or implement activities to raise financial and in-kind support.

Ranges from three to

four hours for a single event to one year as a committee member.

MANAGEMENT/

·     Plan, develop, implement and/or monitor sports programs, activities, events, and competitions.

Ranges from two to three months for

GENERAL

OFFICE DUTIES

·     Administrative tasks associated with supporting administrative and program functions, such as: filling out paperwork, distributing volunteer forms, stuffing envelopes, etc, data entry, etc.

GLOBAL

MESSENGER

COACH

·     Serve as an athlete's speech coach. Coaches learn how to help the athlete prepare a speech to address various types of public groups and corporate audiences on a variety of topics related to Special Olympics.

One to three hours a

month, as needed.

MEDICAL TEAM

·     Volunteers with medical background (MD, RN, LVN, EMT, AFA) are needed to assist with medical support of the athletes and volunteers.

Four to eight hour shifts one or more days a year.

PROFESSIONAL

·     Provide medical support including free physicals and X-rays

·     Provide pro bono services (e.g., Legal, Accounting, MIS/Technical Support, PR)

·     Contribute specific skills to help Special Olympics.

·     Develop surveys, gather, and document information.
