Sports Offered

"We can do anything." ~David Payner

Through Special Olympics Southern California, David Payner has made friends, become accepted by his peers, and found joy in competing. It has changed his life.

Special Olympics Southern California offers year-round sports training and athletic competition in Olympic-type sports to children and adults with intellectual disabilities. We currently offer 12 sports, divided into two sports seasons: Spring/Summer includes aquatics, athletics (track & field), basketball, bocce, golf and gymnastics; Fall/Winter sports are bowling, floor hockey, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball.

View our Local Programs page to see which sports are offered near you or visit our Events Calendar to see upcoming Sports Events.

  • Participation is open to anyone age eight and older, and programs are designed to serve all ability levels, all at no cost to participants.
  • Athletes are grouped in competition divisions according to ability level, age and gender.
  • Special Olympics also offers events for lower ability level athletes to train and compete in basic skills. The development of these key skills is necessary prior to advancing to longer competitive events.
